Quebec Iron Ore
Despite the global health situation and the lockdown over these past months related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the current iron market is going through a period of growth. In recent years, mining companies operating in Quebec and Labrador have taken advantage of the market conditions to increase production capacities and optimize extraction, concentration, transport and transshipment operations in Quebec. The deposits currently in operation several hundred kilometres to the north have a direct impact on the activity and economy of the port cities of Sept-Îles, Port-Cartier and Havre-Saint-Pierre, and the Montréal, Valleyfield, Contrecœur and Sorel regions in southern Quebec. In the North Shore region, more precisely in the Bay of Sept-Îles, world-class infrastructure provides rail access to the Labrador Trough.
To take stock of the current situation in the region and the iron market, RMI Magazine spoke with key stakeholders involved in mining, transporting and shipping iron ore in the summer of 2020: Pierre D. Gagnon, President and CEO of the Port of Sept-Îles, Louis Gravel, President and CEO of SFP Pointe-Noire and David Cataford, President of Quebec Iron Ore.
