State of Iron in Quebec: Towards decarbonization of the iron and steel industry

Mined in large quantities worldwide, iron is a metal used in every construction sector (buildings, infrastructure, transportation, automotive, etc.), and competition between major producers is fierce. In 2012, Canada was the 9th largest producer of iron ore, with a production of 40 million tonnes (Mt), or just over 1.3% of the global market at the time. A decade later, the production from Canadian iron ore companies increased to about 58 Mt, a remarkable growth of 45% over 10 years. In 2022, global iron ore production was 2.6 billion tonnes (Gt).
